01
Greece's secret green island. Pine forests, golden sand, honest tavernas.
Pine forests tumble down to golden sand. Honey drips from mountain apiaries. Fish arrives at tavernas still twitching. Thassos is what the Greek islands felt like before Instagram found them—and somehow, it still does.
Northern Greece's emerald island flies under the radar because international tourists chase the Cyclades. The ring road is 95 km of coast-to-mountain-village driving. Two weeks fills perfectly.
White marble pebble-sand, crystal water, dramatic cliff backdrop. Unique in Greece.
Long golden sand, shallow entry, pine-backed. The main family beach—earns the name.
Sandy cove near Kinira. Calm water, snorkeling, a few beach bars. Quieter than Golden Beach.
Ancient marble quarry ruins meet fine sand. Swim where Romans carved columns.
Private villas and bungalows with pool. Clean, comfortable, not luxury. Book by April/May for July–August.

Where Greece gets dramatic. Sand dunes, fortress towns, underground caves.
Voidokilia is a perfect omega of sand. Simos Beach on tiny Elafonisos has Caribbean-grade dunes. Between them, the Mani peninsula rises—stone tower villages, underground river caves at Diros, the medieval fortress island of Monemvasia. This isn't beach-only Greece. It's Greece with depth.
Base in a pool villa in the Mani or near Gytheio. Rent a car. Two weeks covers both coasts, the mountain villages, and the islands—with days to spare for doing nothing.
The omega. Perfect half-circle of sand. One of Europe's most photographed beaches.
Double bay of golden sand with juniper dunes. 8-minute ferry ride. This is the one.
Long sandy beach near Gytheio. Turtle nesting site. Shallow, warm, easy everyday beach.
Medieval fortress on a rock island. Not a beach—a day trip you won't forget.

Italy's heel. The food alone is worth the flight.
Pescoluse is called the "Maldives of Salento" and for once the nickname isn't overselling it—white sand, shallow turquoise water, enough coastline to find space. But Salento's weapon is the table. Orecchiette pulled by grandmothers, burrata so fresh it's still warm, seafood crudo, granita for breakfast.
Stay in a masseria—converted Puglian farmhouse with stone walls, olive groves, and a pool in the courtyard. Drive between baroque towns, trulli villages, and beaches.
"Maldive del Salento." Fine white sand, shallow turquoise water, kilometres of coast.
Wild dune beach with sandbars. Shallow for hundreds of metres. Italy's secret.
Sandy bay flanked by twin sea stacks (Le Due Sorelle). Pine-backed, family-friendly.
Dramatic cliff-framed cove below a white town. Day trip north. Most photogenic spot in Puglia.

Baroque towns, volcanic soil, arguably Italy's best food.
If you want an island, Sicily is the one. Not the crowded Taormina north—the baroque southeast around Syracuse, Ragusa, and Noto. Sandy beaches like Fontane Bianche and Calamosche, the ancient theatre in Syracuse, cannoli that ruin all future cannoli, and granita con brioche for breakfast.
The food here competes with Salento and might win. A 2-Michelin-star restaurant in a Ragusa palazzo costs what a mediocre dinner costs in Paris. Arancini from a street stall costs €2 and changes your life.
Sandy cove in a nature reserve. No buildings, no bars, just sand and crystal water. Arrive by short hike.
White sand, shallow water, 20 min from Syracuse. The easy family beach.
Fishing village with sandy beaches nearby. The piazza is one of Sicily's prettiest. Tuna tradition.
Sicily's southernmost tip. Two seas meet. Sandy, wild, windswept. Walk to the tiny island at low tide.
